Commissioned as a year-round retreat for contemplation and ceremony, the Solstice Pavilion is sited within an ancient cedar grove at the edge of the Arashiyama bamboo district. The structure's geometry is calibrated to the solstices — at midsummer and midwinter, shafts of light align precisely with the central axis of the pavilion. The material palette of weathered corten steel, local cedar, and raked gravel honors the Japanese tradition of wabi-sabi.
